June 9, 1931 ~ June 6, 2021 (age 89)

Obituary

Bessie Lee (Seal) Greene “Phoebe”, of Sneedville, departed this life Sunday, June 6, 2021.  She was born on June 9, 1931 to Robert H. & Bessie Lee Seal.  She was saved at an early age and joined Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church, being a member there for many years, then joined Trent Valley Baptist Church where her husband, Tillman Greene Jr. was a member. Then, returned to Cedar Grove, where she remained a member until departing this life.  She was a very devoted member of her church and during this pandemic, unable to go, she longed to be able to get back more than anything.  Most all who knew her called her by her lifelong nickname of Phoebe. She waited to marry until in her early 40’s, when she married a farmer, Tillman Greene Jr.  They worked side by side on their farm raising cattle, hay, corn and big gardens.  She harvested and canned lots of vegetables for many years.  For several years, she sang at funerals with The Clinch River Quartet, all who have preceded her in death.  She was a source of spiritual inspiration and guidance to her church, family and friends.  She worked for Sneedville Furniture & Electric for several years as bookkeeper, then later at the Hancock County Extension Office as secretary/bookkeeper, retiring from there.  She was preceded in death by her parents, R.H. & Bessie Lee Seal; siblings, Joseph Clay Seal, Allen H. Seal, LeNelle (Jane) Greene & Thelma Winstead; nephews, David Winstead & Maurice Greene; great nephew, Colby Winstead and husband, Tillman Greene Jr.
